DoDoxumentale umentale kündigt Wettbewerb an

The competition films for the 1st Doxumentale have been announced. Ten films, including eight German premieres and one international premiere, will compete for the €20,000 grand prize, awarded by an international jury consisting of Marie Erbs Ørbæk (CPH:DOX), Mara Prohaska Marković (Beldocs), and director Ibrahim Nash'at (HOLLYWOODGATE). Of the prize, €10,000 will go directly to the filmmaker, while the remaining €10,000 will support marketing efforts surrounding the film’s release. With this, Doxumentale aims to contribute to the sustainable distribution of documentary films.

The Competition Films

The competition program addresses major themes like empowerment, climate change, and environmental protection. STANDING ABOVE THE CLOUDS by Jalena Keane-Lees and YINTAH by Brenda Michell, Michael Toledano, and Jennifer Wickham portray Indigenous activists fighting against environmental exploitation. Katarina Stankovic's THE TEMPEST OF NEPTUN explores the limits of tourism, while Debra Aroko and Nicole Gormley’s SEARCHING FOR AMANI delves into the troubling intersection of colonial legacy and climate change through the mysterious death of a tour guide in Kenya.

In MY SEXTORTION DIARIES, director Patricia Franquesa recounts a hacking incident that led to the circulation of her nude photos. Santiago Mazas’ STATE OF SILENCE highlights courageous individuals fighting for press freedom amidst Mexican drug cartels and corruption. THE FRIENDSHIP BENCH by Reabetswe Moeti-Vogt tells a different story of activism: In Zimbabwe, grandmothers are trained to engage in conversations and offer support on "Friendship Benches" due to the country’s shortage of psychologists.

Art is also well represented. In NEW WAVE, Elisabeth Ai reflects on the role New Wave music played for Vietnamese refugees in 1980s USA. Lucija Stojevic’s PEPI FANDANGO follows Holocaust survivor and musician Peter Pérez as he searches for the music that gave him strength since the Third Reich: Fandango, a variation of Flamenco. Lastly, D.W. Young’s UNCROPPED pays tribute to legendary photographer James Hamilton and his body of work.

In over 120 film screenings and events, Doxumentale presents a wide range of documentary work.

• As part of the d'Lounge series, which hosts film screenings at unusual locations in Berlin, filmmaker Elizabeth Ai will present her competition entry NEW WAVE at the DASHI Canteen, followed by a DJ set by Ai herself.
• Additionally, ALREADYMADE by Barbara Visser, a film that explores Marcel Duchamp's The Fountain and questions its authorship, will be screened at the Berlinische Galerie as another d'Lounge event.
• One of eight d'Salons—which combine readings, discussions, and film screenings at the Doxumentale festival center—will be dedicated to club culture. With Aaron Trinder's FREE PARTY: A FOLK HISTORY, the festival not only explores the history of the British underground movement and the rave culture of the late '80s, but also welcomes Spiral Tribe artist Mark Angelo Harrison for a reading from his book A Darker Electricity: The Origins Of The Spiral Tribe Soundsystem.
• Another d'Salon will focus on science and ethical questions. Kerstin Hoppenhaus will present her book Die Salze der Erde, while Hans Dortmans, with his documentary HIDDEN DANCE OF EELS, attempts to uncover the mysteries of the enigmatic eel, a creature that still presents many puzzles.

Visitors can also experience the following films in theaters:

• SOUNDTRACK TO A COUP D'ETAT by Johan Grimonprez, which premiered at Sundance and honors the role of jazz musicians after the assassination of Lumumba in 1961 in the newly independent Congo.
• GRASSHOPPER REPUBLIC by Daniel McCabe, which showcases a little-known tradition from Uganda: the ceremonial harvesting of grasshoppers as a delicacy during their mating season.
• FAUNA by Pau Faus, a documentary essay exploring the parallels of modern society: during the COVID-19 pandemic, a shepherd near Barcelona lives alongside a high-tech lab conducting animal experiments.
• WARM FILM by Dragan Jovićević, which examines how queer people have been represented and portrayed in Yugoslavian and Serbian cinema over the decades.
• IRIS by Anke Sterneborg and Irene Höfer, a TV documentary shedding light on the legendary German star Iris Berben and her prominent companions, including Jim Rakete, Ruben Östlund, and Barbara Sukowa.
• HOLLYWOOD GATE by jury member Ibrahim Nash'ta (closing film), documenting the Taliban's return to power in Afghanistan and the rebuilding of their propaganda structures.

The Good Media Pitch and D'Hub - Meeting Point for the Film Industry and Civil Society
From October 14 to 16, Doxumentale offers the d'Hub, a hybrid platform of panels and workshops exclusively for industry professionals. The flagship event of the d'Hub is The Good Media Pitch, where six film teams will pitch impact strategies developed over the past months with international experts from The Good Media Lab. These strategies, focused on digital campaigns, partner acquisition, and distribution, not only have the potential to enhance the reach of the films but also to drive societal transformations more directly. Alongside the pitch, which takes place on October 15, d'Hub will offer a diverse program of interactive discussions and workshops on October 14 and 16, addressing the foundations and ethical considerations of documentary storytelling as well as future trends.

Festival Passes + Ticket Purchase
Visitors to Doxumentale can purchase two different festival passes on the website, granting access either to all events or to five selected events during the festival, along with selected films available for streaming. Admission to the VX and media exhibition is based on voluntary donations.

Die Wettbewerbsfilme der 1. Doxumentale stehen fest. Zehn Filme, davon acht Deutschlandpremieren sowie eine Internationale Premiere, konkurrieren miteinander um den mit 20.000 Euro dotierten Hauptpreis, der von einer internationalen Jury aus Marie Erbs Ørbæk (CPH:DOX), Mara Prohaska Marković (Beldocs) und dem Regisseur Ibrahim Nash'at (HOLLYWOODGATE) vergeben wird. Dabei gehen 10.000 Euro direkt an die Filmemacher*in, die anderen 10.000 Euro sollen die Marketingmaßnahmen rund um die Filmveröffentlichung unterstützen. Damit möchte die Doxumentale einen Beitrag zur nachhaltigen Dokumentarfilmauswertung leisten. 

Die Filme des Wettbewerbs 

Das Wettbewerbsprogramm verhandelt große Themen wie Selbstermächtigung, Klimawandel und Naturschutz. Jalena Keane-Lees STANDING ABOVE THE CLOUDS sowie YINTAH von Brenda Michell, Michael Toledano und Jennifer Wickham porträtieren indigene Aktivist*innen in ihrem Kampf gegen Eingriffe in die Natur. Katarina Stankovics THE TEMPEST OF NEPTUN fragt nach den Grenzen des Tourismus. Und Debra Aroko und Nicole Gormley erzählen in SEARCHING FOR AMANI anhand des mysteriösen Todes eines Tourguides in Kenia von der unguten Verquickung von kolonialem Erbe und Klimawandel. 

In MY SEXTORTION DIARIES verarbeitet die Regisseurin Patricia Franquesa einen Hackerangriff, der Nacktbilder von ihr kursieren ließ. Santiago Mazas STATE OF SILENCE zeigt beeindruckende Menschen, die sich für die Pressefreiheit zwischen mexikanischen Drogenkartellen und Korruption einsetzen. THE FRIENDSHIP BENCH von Reabetswe Moeti-Vogt widmet sich hingegen einen Aktivismus der anderen Art: Da das Land über zu wenige Psycholog*innen verfügt, werden in Zimbabwe Großmütter dazu ausgebildet, auf sogenannten "Friendship Benches" mit Menschen ins Gespräch zu kommen und zuzuhören. 

Auch die Kunst kommt nicht zu kurz. Mit NEW WAVE blickt Elisabeth Ai auf die Rolle, die New Wave für vietnamesische Flüchtlinge in den USA der 1980ern spielte. In Lucija Stojevics PEPI FANDANGO geht es um den Holocaust-Überlebenden und Musiker Peter Pérez, der sich auf die Suche nach den Tönen macht, die ihm seit dem Dritten Reich Lebenskraft spendeten: dem Fandango, einer Variation des Flamenco. Und D.W. Young setzt mit UNCROPPED dem legendären Fotografen James Hamilton und seinem Oeuvre ein Denkmal.

Weitere Festivalhighlights 

In über 120 Filmvorführungen und Veranstaltungen präsentiert die Doxumentale eine große Brandbreite des dokumentarischen Schaffens.

• Im Rahmen der Reihe d'Lounge, die Filmscreenings an ungewöhnlichen Orten in Berlin stattfinden lässt, stellt die Filmemacherin Elizabeth Ai ihren Wettbewerbsbeitrag NEW WAVE in der DASHI Canteen vor und legt selbst anschließend auf.
• Außerdem wird der Film ALREADYMADE von Barbara Visser, der sich mit Marcel Duchamps "The Fountain" beschäftigt und den Zweifeln an seiner Urheberschaft nachgeht, in der Berlinischen Galerie als weitere d'Lounge präsentiert.
• Einer von insgesamt acht d'Salons - die Lesungen mit Gesprächen und Filmvorführungen im Festivalzentrum der Doxumentale verbinden - widmet sich der Clubkultur: mit Aaron Trinders FREE PARTY: A FOLK HISTORY zeigt das Festival nicht nur die Geschichte des britischen Undergroundmovements um die in den späten 80ern entstehende Rave-Kultur, sondern lädt auch Spiral-Tribe-Artist Mark Angelo Harrison für eine Lesung aus seinem Buch "A Darker Electricity: The Origins Of The Spiral Tribe Soundsystem" ein.
• Ein weiterer d'Salon widmet sich der Wissenschaft und ethischen Fragen - Kerstin Hoppenhaus bringt dafür ihr Buch "Die Salze der Erde" mit, während Hans Dortmans mit seinem Dokumentarfilm HIDDEN DANCE OF EELS versucht, dem geheimnisvollen Fisch auf die Spur zu kommen, der immer noch so viele Rätsel aufgibt.

• FAUNA von Pau Faus, ein Doku-Essay über die Parallelitäten der modernen Gesellschaft: In Corona-Zeiten lebt ein Schäfer nähe Barcelona Seit an Seit mit einem Hi-Tech-Labor, in dem Tierversuche durchgeführt werden.
• WARM FILM von Dragan Jovićević, der untersucht, wie queere Menschen im jugoslawischen und auch serbischen Kino über die Jahrzehnte repräsentiert und dargestellt wurden.
• IRIS, Anke Sterneborg und Irene Höfer beleuchten in ihrer Fernsehdokumentation den großen deutschen Star Iris Berben und ihre prominenten Weggefährt*innen, darunter Jim Rakete, Ruben Östlund und Barbara Sukowa.
• HOLLYWOOD GATE von Jurymitglied Ibrahim Nash'ta (Abschlussfilm), der die erneute Machtübernahme durch die Taliban in Afghanistan und den Aufbau der Propagandastrukturen dokumentiert.

The Good Media Pitch und D'Hub - Treffpunkt für Filmindustrie und Zivilgesellschaft 
Die Doxumentale bietet vom 14. bis 16. Oktober mit dem d'Hub eine hybrid stattfindende Plattform aus Panels und Workshops an, das sich ausschließlich an ein Fachpublikum richtet. Das Leuchtturmprojekt des d'Hubs ist der The Good Media Pitch, in dessen Rahmen sechs Filmteams Impact Strategien pitchen, die sie über die letzten Monate gemeinsam mit internationalen Expert*innen im Rahmen des The Good Media Labs erarbeitet haben. Die Strategien aus den Bereichen (digitale) Kampagnen, Partnerakquise und Auswertung verstärken nicht nur potentiell die Reichweite der Filme, sondern können auch gesellschaftliche Transformationen direkter vorantreiben. Neben dem Pitch, der am 15. Oktober stattfindet, bietet der d'Hub am 14. und 16. Oktober ein diverses Programm aus interaktiven Gesprächen und Workshops, in dem es um die Grundlagen und ethische Überlegungen des dokumentarischen Erzählens sowie um Zukunftstrends geht.

Festivalpässe + Ticketkauf
Auf der Website können sich Doxumentale -Besucher*innen zwei unterschiedliche Festivalpässe sichern, die ihnen entweder Zugang zu allen oder zu fünf ausgewählten Veranstaltungen während der Doxumentale gewähren - sowie zu ausgewählten Filmen, die zusätzlich im Stream zur Verfügung stehen. Der Eintritt in die VX- und Medienausstellung beruht auf freiwilliger Spendenbasis.
