The 1920s saw the rapid emergence of a great number of social housing estates. One of these estates Berlin’s Onkel Toms Hütte was initially planned without shopping facilities. To cope with this issue a shopping walkway was created alongside the subway station which leads to the neighbourhood. Stanley Fuls explains how this historic walkway can be revived.
