Mariinka
Pieter-Jan De Pue / Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Sweden / 2026 / 94 min
In the frontline city of Mariinka in eastern Ukraine, war had been a constant long before 2022. Filmed over ten years on 16mm, this documentary follows the lives of young people from the city. A promising boxer becomes a medic at the front, a young woman smuggles goods across the border to survive, and two brothers find themselves fighting on opposing sides. While their youngest sibling grows up far from the war in the United States, the others remain behind in a city slowly crumbling away. Through letters, video calls, and quiet moments, the film captures how war fractures families and how Mariinka gradually fades from the map.
