UNAI
Japan / 2026 / 106 min
In 2016, residents of Okinawa discover that their tap water is contaminated with PFAS, toxic chemicals traced back to U.S. military bases on the island. Around 450,000 people are affected. Neither the Japanese nor the U.S. authorities are willing to investigate.
Yumi Nakasone is a housewife and mother. Without knowing it, she has been feeding her baby poisoned water. She decides to act: she runs for local office, wins, and takes the fight to the United Nations. Her story is not an exception. It stands for many others.
UNAI links Okinawa to similar PFAS crises in the United States and Italy and builds a global picture from close, personal stories. A film about mothers who demand accountability, and about a slow, invisible poison that only shows itself once it is already inside you.
