With the summer preview, which will be held between July 18th and 21st, we are offering an exquisite first taste of the festival in autumn in various locations throughout Berlin. Carefully selected film highlights are ringing in the summer break to be enjoyed in pleasantly cool cinemas.

But the summer special is much more than just film entertainment. Be curious and participate in lively discussions that are guaranteed to put you in the best festival mood. Let yourself be seduced by the first highlights and experience documentaries in the most beautiful sense:

  • »The Making Of A Japanese« takes you into the microcosm of a public primary school in Tokyo. Over the course of a year, we accompany pupils in first and sixth grade and immerse ourselves in a school system that is very different from ours. Discipline, a sense of community and good manners are highly valued here alongside the traditional curriculum. An exciting look at the interplay between individualism and respect in everyday life.

  • »A Thousand Cuts« takes you right into the centre of the fight for press freedom in the Philippines. The award-winning documentary follows renowned journalist Maria Ressa, who has become a central target in President Rodrigo Duterte's campaign against free media.

  • »Bella Ciao« tells the story behind the world's most famous protest song. »Bella Ciao« may have gained worldwide fame through the Netflix series »Money Heist«, but the documentary »Bella Ciao« digs deeper and tells the whole fascinating story behind the song. With exclusive music rights and interviews with influential personalities from the past and present, a comprehensive picture of this revolutionary song emerges.

  • »Kabul Beauty«: The film takes you to Afghanistan, where two best friends, Sofia and Nigina, run a beauty parlour in Kabul. In the midst of Taliban rule, their salon offers a retreat for women where they can be pampered and openly discuss the current situation. The film follows the two women over a year and a half and provides intimate insights into their struggle for freedom and friendship.

These are just some of the great documentaries that await you in the summer special. Be excited for moving stories, inspirational discussions and plenty of festival feeling!

Pre-sales ticket for the Summer Preview start on June 1st 2024!
