Documentary Work in War and Crisis Zones

29 May, 2026, 4.00 PM @ Festival Center: Lounge 19

Event language: English

What does it take to film in regions affected by war, crisis, repression, or political instability? This practice-driven session explores the complex realities of working in high-risk environments, where every decision carries significant logistical, ethical, and personal consequences. From safety planning and legal considerations to emergency protocols, trusted local networks, and effective communication strategies, the session delves into the essential structures that must be in place before filming can begin. It also addresses the filmmaker’s responsibility toward their crews, protagonists, fixers, and local partners, alongside the psychological toll of working in environments where crisis is part of everyday life.

Combining expert insights, practical advice, and open dialogue, this session serves as both a conversation and a hands-on working space. Participants will gain valuable knowledge on concrete preparation methods, risk assessment tools, and decision-making processes based on real-world production scenarios. The session will also offer space for questions, shared experiences, and case-based discussions, focusing on how to prepare responsibly, adapt to rapidly evolving situations, and maintain greater awareness when working in unstable environments.
