Press Freedom in a Virtual World: The Uncensored Library

02 Jun, 2026, 6.00 PM @ Festival Centre: Atrium Tower

Event language: English

Press freedom is under increasing pressure worldwide. In many regions, state censorship mechanisms are tightening while independent journalism is being systematically suppressed. The Uncensored Library responds directly to this reality: a virtual library built inside Minecraft, using an unexpected digital space to make journalistic texts accessible from countries where they are censored, banned, or silenced.

The Library positions itself as a creative countermodel to conventional censorship — relocating journalistic content into a playful, globally accessible environment and opening up new pathways for distribution and visibility. A recently added chapter on the United States expands existing archives covering countries such as Russia, Iran, Belarus, and Saudi Arabia, making clear that questions of press freedom, state control, and digital access are no longer confined to authoritarian regimes — they demand a global conversation.

In a moderated discussion, Reporters Without Borders offer insight into the Uncensored Library project: how the idea came about, how the Library has evolved over time, and what role digital spaces play today in the fight against censorship and for journalistic visibility.
