Another Story: Making Women in Documentary Film History Visible

Film history will no longer be the same. The curated programs and activities developed by partners of Another Story impulse a new reading of curation and film history, flagging on forgotten titles and rediscoveries.

Another Take

A shift in film curation focuses on celebrating talented women directors who were on the margin of the production field or put aside by the critic’s and award profiles. We want to put the spotlight on directors with extraordinary artistic and unusual journeys, directors for example who went unknown throughout the records and directors of only one (successful) film, and who then became assistants to established (male) directors.

Another Gaze

We are looking at films based on complex stories and developing ambitious storytelling, films that address issues close to women, but that were not necessarily expected from women directors. They are films that take front row and offer another gaze on topics and mise en scene artistry.

Another Perspective

Another Story offers to promote collective and innovative formats to deepen conversations around women directors and their struggle but also achievements. We bring back value to previous directors and their fascinating journey in film history to inspire future generations. We cultivate a collective attention on the diversity in our programming (in terms of country of origin, social background and language) as to go beyond expectations towards canons of cinema.

ANOTHER STORY with its 5 European partners aims to give more visibility to documentary cinema by women directors of the 20th and 21st centuries, long overlooked by cinema history. Main partners are: HER Docs Foundation (Poland), Festival dei Popoli (Italy), The Good Media Network organizing the Doxumentale Festival (Germany), The Balkan Documentary Center organizing the Sofia DouMental Festival (Bulgaria) and online media Cineuropa (Belgium). Non profit association Loreley Films (Switzerland) is an associate partner as a guest curator. Over two years the partners will engage audiences through curated programmes and activities such as: double screenings, wikipedia workshops, critic’s labs and panel discussions. ANOTHER STORY wants to spark curiosity and initiate more in depth conversations around women’s contributions to the documentary cinema.

At this year's Doxumentale Another story will feature the films ICH DENKE OFT AN HAWAII (Elfi Mikesch I DE I 1978 I 85 min), ROAD OF BROTHERHOOD AND UNITY (Maja Weiss I SI I 1999 I 104 min) and THE WOMAN‘S GREATEST VALUE IS HER SILENCE (Gertrud Pinkus I DE, CH I 1980 I 90 min).

Ich denke oft an Hawaii

Carmen, 16, lives on the outskirts of Berlin with her mother Ruth and her brother Tito. Her father, a Puerto Rican soldier, is long gone, leaving behind only music records and postcards. Within her monotonous daily routine amid gray housing blocks, she dreams of becoming a dancer. In bold makeup and flowing robes, she stages her fantasies for the camera, conjuring fleeting moments of love and escape. The film observes her with quiet intimacy, where reality and imagination merge into a vivid counterworld—one in which desire briefly transcends the limits of her everyday life.

The Woman’s Greatest Value is Her Silence

Maria, a young migrant from southern Italy, reflects on her life in Frankfurt alongside Giacomo, whom she married against her parents’ wishes. In keeping with the code of silence of her home region, her story is interpreted on camera by other immigrant protagonists. What began as a documentary portrait evolves into a hybrid work that is ambiguous and humorous, blending reality and fiction, as well as minor and major histories. Through reenactments that merge Maria’s life with the experiences of those portraying her, the film explores themes of uprooting, integration, and resignation. Observational sequences intertwine with subtly staged scenes that evoke Maria’s inner world.
