SISTERQUEENS: A Hip-Hop Revolution

Doxumentale 2024 is set to make a powerful statement with its opening film, SISTERQUEENS. This inspiring documentary, directed by Clara Stella Hüneke, will kick off the 1st Media and Documentary Film Festival on October 10th at the Colosseum Film Theatre in Berlin.

SISTERQUEENS follows the journey of a group of young girls between the ages of 8 and 16, who are part of a rap project of the same name in Berlin-Wedding. The rap project, which has been running for eight years in collaboration with the oldest girls' centre in Berlin Mädea provides these girls with a safe and supportive space to learn the craft of rap and promote their creativity. Under the mentorship of experienced rappers like Ebow, the Sisterqueens not only hone their musical skills but also build strong bonds within their community.

Bridging Divides: Stories of Home, Identity, and Sisterhood

Hüneke's documentary, which has already garnered significant attention following its premiere at the Munich Film Festival, offers a captivating glimpse into the lives of three members of Sisterqueens, capturing their personal journeys, their triumphs, and their challenges.

Sisterqueens is more than just a documentary about rap; it's a testament to the power of sisterhood, empowerment and political strength of art. By showcasing the experiences of these young girls as they raise questions about self-determination, identity and the pursuit of equality, the film highlights the importance of providing spaces for the youth to express themselves and encourages their political participation.

As the opening film of Doxumentale 2024, Sisterqueens is sure to set the tone for a festival that celebrates the transformative power of documentary filmmaking.
