The tension between the irrepressible urge to unlock nature’s secrets and the need to respect ethical boundaries will be the focus of this discussion. The book Die Salze der Erde by Kerstin Hoppenhaus shows how phosphorus, nitrogen, and potassium are shaping our world and our future. The talk will be followed by a screening of the documentary Hidden Dance of Eels, about the reproductive behaviour of eels, which is still a mystery.

Kerstin Hoppenhaus
Kerstin Hoppenhaus studied biology in Jena and science film in Ludwigsburg.After graduating, she worked as a director on documentary series for Arte.Since 2010 she has been developing and producing video and multimedia projects for Die Zeit, Süddeutsche Zeitung and the BBC, among others.She has received several awards for her work in science journalism.
Hans Dortmans
Hans Dortmans is a documentary director, researcher and scriptwriter. His work often explores complex and thought-provoking subjects, challenging conventional narratives. With a background in cultural and religious psychology, he has co-authored more than 40 documentaries, including the Prix Europe-winning series ‘In Europe’ and the Emmy-winning film ‘Bellingcat, truth in a post-truth world’.
Fabian Schäfer
For as long as I can remember, I've been fascinated by the underwater world. Studying Fisheries Science at the University of Hamburg allowed me to turn my hobby into a profession. In 2016, I completed my PhD at Humboldt University Berlin, focusing on the reproduction of pikeperch. Since then, as the coordinator of the Aquaculture Info project at IGB, I've been working on various topics and species in aquaculture. My fascination with aquatic life continues to inspire and motivate me every day.

Vivian Schröder started her career in the film industry producing commercials in the entertainment sector.Since 2012 she has been working closely with Boekamp & Kriegsheim.There she focused on the production of documentaries and series.Through B&K's production The Bornio Case, she got to know the principle of Impact Producing and has been working as Germany's first Impact Producer since 2020. She co-founded The Good Media Network and Dokumentale.
